First Dutch Detention Roof for soft drink supplier Vrumona

Picture: © Ritchie Damwijk The very first Detention Roof in the Netherlands was recently installed on the Vrumona business premises in the municipality of Bunnik. On November 8, 2021, the 588 m2 green roof was officially opened by local alderman Jocko Rensen. Thanks to this innovative green roof concept, the risk of flooding due to extreme precipitation on the site will be drastically reduced. The Detention Roof can store rainwater in a fully saturated state and discharge it in a delayed and controlled manner. Making the Utrecht region more climate-proof In recent years several green initiatives have emerged in the province of Utrecht. Detention Roof supplier Sempergreen recently signed a Declaration of Intent for Climate Adaptive Building with the Province of Utrecht with the aim of making the Utrecht region more climate-proof. Both Vrumona and Sempergreen are also participants of Green Business Club Bunnik. Thanks to this green initiative, the companies came into contact and were able to realize this ambitious green roof project together. Sjors Wessels of Sempergreen, participant of Green Business Club Bunnik: “We are very pleased with the extensive collaboration that has been established to realize this innovative project. It shows that local initiatives in the field of sustainability can be an important basis for projects that make the region more climate resilient. By this initiative, Vrumona is taking an important first step in the field of preventing water problems at and around the business park.” Preliminary exploration with the help of Water Board At the start of the project, the parties involved mapped out issues that could cause flooding in the area together with Water Board ‘De Stichtse Rijnlanden’. This preliminary exploration showed that the business park where Vrumona is located at, is predominantly petrified and would benefit hugely from a Detention Roof. With the implementation of this Detention Roof, a large part of the water problem in the area will be solved, because water is discharged in a delayed and controlled manner. In the event of extreme precipitation the Detention Roof will relieve the sewer system. Moreover, the green roof system complies with governmental water policies, rainwater regulation and/or other, increasing requirements of municipalities and water boards. Evelien Sanders-De Boer, General Manager of Vrumona: “This green roof is a wonderful example of local collaboration and fits in perfectly with the circular and sustainable mission that we have at Vrumona. Water is a crucial part of our product and a good and efficient water supply on our site is very important.”

Webinar Innovation for future-proof cities

12 OCTOBER 2021 Sempergreen Academy is organising her first webinar with the topic “Innovation for future-proof cities – effective climate adaptation strategies to counter urban flooding”. In this webinar meteorologist Roosmarijn Knol and Dr. Anna Zakrisson (Green Roof Diagnostics) discuss both the causes and possible solutions to the sometimes devastating effects of climate change. The importance of climate-resilient cities We can no longer deny it. The negative effects of climate change are becoming more frequent and more severe. This year we’ve seen the flooding of many cities, followed by the destruction of infrastructure and even loss of human life. It is therefore of great importance that our cities are made climate-resilient as soon as possible. How do you design a future-proof city? In the free webinar Roosmarijn Knol, meteorologist at Infoplaza, explains the causes of flooding from a meteorogical viewpoint. Followed by Dr. Anna Zakrisson, Vice President of European Affairs at Green Roof Diagnostics, who will present various scientific solutions in terms of sustainable urban planning and climate-adaptive architecture. One of these solutions, for example, is the collection of rainwater directly where it falls, instead of it ending up in an already overloaded sewer system. The free webinar is open to everyone, including policy makers, municipalities, urban planners, developers and architects, who wish to make their city climate adaptive. Date: Tuesday 12 October 2021 Time: 13:00-14:00 CET Language: English Sign up for the free webinar here. The first energy-neutral fast food restaurant in the world McDonald’s has opened a sustainable flagship restaurant at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. With this pilot project, they’re aiming to have the first energy-neutral fast food restaurant in the world. The restaurant’s many eco-friendly features include two SemperGreenwalls covering almost 185 square meters. The restaurant has been designed by Ross Barney Architects and architectural and engineering firm CPH. Not only were the living walls included as an impressive design feature, they also offer environmental benefits like reducing water runoff, cooling the air in- and outside the building, and stimulating local biodiversity. Green living walls year-round The designers have also been involved in the plant choices for the SemperGreenwalls. These have been tailored to the subtropical climate of Orlando, including native Floridian plants that require less water. To keep the facades green all year round, they have been equipped with the unique Sempergreen Plant Care System. This web-based system allows the walls to be monitored remotely and ensures that the plants are provided with the correct amount of water and nutrients.  Sustainability measures McDonald’s Flagship The building also contains plenty of other environmentally-friendly features. On the roof, over a 1.000 solar panels and solar glass have been installed to run the whole restaurant on sustainable energy. At the ground level, permeable paving has been used to enable better water management on-site. The data and experiences from this pilot restaurant in Walt Disney World Orlando will be a source of information for McDonald’s global sustainability efforts. Besides working towards their goal of lowering their CO2 emissions by 36% between 2015 and 2030, the fast food chain also wants to inform its customers about the importance of sustainability. Therefore, the restaurant offers fun green amenities, like informative games and bikes which customers can use to generate electricity and light up the McDonald’s logo. The lit arches of the ‘M’ create a beautiful contrast with the green walls surrounding them. Launch of Sempergreen white paper: ‘Building for Biodiversity’

How can green roofs contribute to promoting biodiversity in urban areas? WGIN member Sempergreen developed a white paper ‘Building for biodiversity’, which answers this question and aims to raise awareness among architects, property developers, governments, and other parties involved in the construction and refurbishment of buildings. Hot topic Biodiversity is becoming a hot topic both in the industrial and political arena, as shown by the EU new Climate Adaptation Strategy and the European Parliament’s recent resolution on the EU biodiversity Strategy for 2030. And rightly so: biodiversity loss will have, and is already having, a devastating impact on both people and planet. Thankfully, we as humans can do something about it. Urbanisation being among the main causes of biodiversity loss across Europe, greening cities is the next logical step. Indeed, as recently recognised by the European Parliament, “green urban areas and green infrastructure can provide ecosystem services to support biodiversity and contribute to the physical and mental well-being of the population”. WGIN, Sempergreen and biodiversity In the new EU Climate Adaption Strategy, a novel focus is put on promoting green roofs and walls as ‘no-regret’ solutions to make urban infrastructure more climate-proof. As member of the World Green Infrastructure Network (WGIN), Sempergreen is actively advocating for increasing green infrastructure in the EU to create a more sustainable society. In addition to this white paper, Sempergreen Trade’s director Stephan Beerends was part of one of the panels of the European Green Infrastructure Day 2021, where he contributed to an illuminating discussion about biodiversity and urban development. You can download the white paper here. All images © Sempergreen

Sempergreen: Innovative Flexipanel A2 resists fire and heavy wind loads

SemperGreenwall first living wall system with fire safety certificate A2 in the market. Sempergreen is proud to announce that its living wall system SemperGreenwall has been awarded the fire safety certificate A2-s2-d0. This fire class is often mandatory in high-rise projects. Sempergreen’s living wall system already had the B-s2-d0 certificate. This means that it was already suitable for project-based applications, including use on escape routes. With the addition of the A2-s2-d0 certificate, the SemperGreenwall now also offers a fire-safe solution for high-rise projects. This makes the SemperGreenwall the first living wall system in the market to meet these very strict fire safety requirements. Innovative Flexipanel A2 resists fire and heavy wind loadsA SemperGreenwall is a modular living wall system built from pre-cultivated Flexipanels. These panels are extremely flexible, making the system also applicable to curved surfaces or corner solutions. In order to meet the strict safety requirements that often apply to high-rise projects, the standard Flexipanel has been further developed into the innovative Flexipanel A2. This new Flexipanel is not only resistant to fire, but also to other extreme conditions, such as heavy wind loads. Tested for flashover and combustion valuesThe potential risks posed by fire in high-rise buildings are very high. The building requirements for high-rise projects are therefore extremely strict. In order to obtain the A2-s2-d0 fire safety certificate, Flexipanel A2 has been subjected to the following tests carried out by Fire Safety Expert Efectis. These tests included combustion values and flashovers. This test determines the heat release, flame spread, smoke development and the formation of burning droplets. A test to determine the maximum burning value. The tests have shown that according to the European fire classification (EN 13501-1), Flexipanel A2 barely contributes to the development of a fire and cannot cause melting parts, only a slight development of smoke. Response to market demand for nature-inclusive and climate-adaptive constructionThe SemperGreenwall is the very first living wall system in the market that meets the fire safety requirements for high-rise projects. With the Flexipanel A2 Sempergreen makes it possible for architects and developers to use a fire-safe living wall system for high-rise projects. This answers the market demand for nature-inclusive and climate-adaptive building. Residential tower Eden Tower in Frankfurt first projectThe first orders for high-rise projects with the application of Flexipanel A2 are already being realized this year, including a residential tower no less than 98 meters high in Frankfurt, called Eden Tower. Sempergreen expects many more similar projects to follow. “The impressive 98 meter high residential tower Eden Tower in Frankfurt is the very first high-rise project to be built with a SemperGreenwall that complies with fire class A2-s2-d0.” About Sempergreen® Sempergreen, headquartered in the Netherlands, is the world’s largest grower and supplier of innovative quality solutions for green roofs, living walls and instant ground cover. Sempergreen is driven by the mission to create a green and liveable world for our generation and the next generations.
