Slovak Association for Green Roof and Green Infrastructure transforms into iCARI

International Climate Adaptation Research Institute (iCARI) transformed from Slovak Association for Green Roof and Green Infrastructure. We are pleased to announce that our member, the Slovak Association for Green Roof and Green Infrastructure has transformed into the international Climate Adaptation Research Institute (iCARI). This strategic evolution marks a significant step forward in our collective efforts to address Climate change and promote sustainable development. iCARI focuses on several core areas, including green and blue infrastructure, urban water retention, energy efficiency in buildings, emission reduction in construction, and urban waste management. By integrating Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and advanced data science methodologies, iCARI aims to enhance ecosystem services, mitigate urban heat islands, improve water management, and promote sustainable building practices. Their commitment to leveraging natural processes and cutting-edge data analytics ensures the development of effective Adaptation and mitigation strategies. Operating locally in Slovakia, regionally within the EU Green Deal framework, and globally to seek feasible measures in the field of Climate change Adaptation, iCARI’s work encompasses research, advocacy, and collaboration. Their initiatives address local challenges while contributing to global solutions, enhancing Climate resilience, and supporting sustainable development. As we look ahead, we anticipate even closer collaboration with iCARI in applied research and data-driven Adaptation measures. This partnership will further our shared goal of comprehensive Climate solutions that adapt to and mitigate Climate change’s impacts. We welcome iCARI and are excited about this transformation’s opportunities for advancing Climate Adaptation research and practices. iCARI will present its projects and announce the first members of its International Scientific Board at the World Green Infrastructure Congress 2024 in Auckland, New Zealand. Making Europe’s Built Environment Greener, Healthier and more Resilient

In the past political mandate, the EU has pursued legislation to combat climate change, restore nature, and promote circularity, aiming for climate neutrality by 2050, as part of the European Green Deal. This led to significant improvements when it comes to the inclusion of urban green and blue infrastructures in EU energy and climate policies. Now, the 2024-2029 EU term must drive the structural transformation of cities from grey to green. In this context, the new WGIN EU Chapter is publishing the briefing “Making Europe’s built environment greener, healthier and more resilient” that provides an overview of the developments for green and blue infrastructure in EU policies in the past political mandate as well as recommendations to support their deployment over the next five years. The paper explains the importance of green infrastructure for the future of Europe’s cities and their crucial role in any future EU urban policies. Read the full publication here.

It’s Water, Stupid!

Paderno Dugnano (Italy), rendering of new plan (already funded) for the creation of a new green area, with recreational spaces for citizens’ and increased permeability for improved rainwater management. Photo: Gruppo CAP  We are in a global water crisis. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, at least 50 per cent of the world’s population, around 4 billion people, have to deal with water supply shortfalls at least one month each year. To preserve water, we need genuine political commitment and increased financing to protect and restore natural spaces. In urban areas, we can increase water resilience through the deployment of off-the-shelf solutions that can restore the urban natural water cycle. In Europe, policy makers have adopted some good rules that can contribute to greener and smarter rainwater management. They include the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and the the EU Nature Restoration Law, probably the biggest driver for the deployment of blue and green infrastructure across European cities. Green Infrastructure, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development

The new publication “Green Infrastructure, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development” by Manfred Koehler, Julian Briz, and Isabel de Felipe is now available on Amazon and at Editorial Agrícola. The publication discusses the interaction of green infrastructures, such as Nature Based Solutions, with climate change to achieve sustainable development. As befits the topics addressed, the approach is very broad, with multidisciplinary authors who make heterogeneous presentations in breadth and objectives. The 296 page book is divided into three parts. The first one covers the multifunctionality of green infrastructures, which shows its usefulness in several scenarios (chapters 1 to 9), the second presents specific cases of themes or projects developed in specific cities (chapters 10 to 17). Finally, an international area (chapters 18 to 22) and a list of international institutions related to green infrastructures. The variety and complexity of the issues that affect us in these areas means that the target audience is also very diverse. We hope that this work stimulates interaction between all the actors involved in the improvement of our local environment. The book was also presented at the Agriculture Pavilion of the Madrid International Book Fair on its 83rd anniversary, with more than 500 exhibitors and three million visitors. NRL supported by citizens in countries not backing the law

A survey was administered through the company Savanta to understand the citizens’ position on the Nature Restoration Law in the countries that currently opposed the law in the EU Council. 6,190 respondents were interviewed across Poland, Finland, Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands, and Hungary between 1st and 9th May 2024. Quotas were set to make the sample nationally representative by age, gender, and region in each country.  The Nature Restoration Law, an EU response to the interlinked climate and biodiversity crises, has been in a stalemate since March when it lost the necessary majority from Member States, following Hungary’s last-minute U-turn. The survey reveals that the majority of people in countries not supporting the law believe that nature and biodiversity decline will have negative long-term effects on people, farming and the economy and that it must be tackled urgently by restoring ecosystems. The results come on the heels of a powerful letter sent by 11 environment ministers, urging their counterparts to adopt the law at the upcoming Environment Council meeting on 17 June. Find the PDF version with all the results of the poll here.
