Green Infrastructure, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development

The new publication “Green Infrastructure, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development” by Manfred Koehler, Julian Briz, and Isabel de Felipe is now available on Amazon and at Editorial Agrícola. The publication discusses the interaction of green infrastructures, such as Nature Based Solutions, with climate change to achieve sustainable development. As befits the topics addressed, the approach is very broad, with multidisciplinary authors who make heterogeneous presentations in breadth and objectives. The 296 page book is divided into three parts. The first one covers the multifunctionality of green infrastructures, which shows its usefulness in several scenarios (chapters 1 to 9), the second presents specific cases of themes or projects developed in specific cities (chapters 10 to 17). Finally, an international area (chapters 18 to 22) and a list of international institutions related to green infrastructures. The variety and complexity of the issues that affect us in these areas means that the target audience is also very diverse. We hope that this work stimulates interaction between all the actors involved in the improvement of our local environment. The book was also presented at the Agriculture Pavilion of the Madrid International Book Fair on its 83rd anniversary, with more than 500 exhibitors and three million visitors. NRL supported by citizens in countries not backing the law

A survey was administered through the company Savanta to understand the citizens’ position on the Nature Restoration Law in the countries that currently opposed the law in the EU Council. 6,190 respondents were interviewed across Poland, Finland, Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands, and Hungary between 1st and 9th May 2024. Quotas were set to make the sample nationally representative by age, gender, and region in each country.  The Nature Restoration Law, an EU response to the interlinked climate and biodiversity crises, has been in a stalemate since March when it lost the necessary majority from Member States, following Hungary’s last-minute U-turn. The survey reveals that the majority of people in countries not supporting the law believe that nature and biodiversity decline will have negative long-term effects on people, farming and the economy and that it must be tackled urgently by restoring ecosystems. The results come on the heels of a powerful letter sent by 11 environment ministers, urging their counterparts to adopt the law at the upcoming Environment Council meeting on 17 June. Find the PDF version with all the results of the poll here.

Cultivating Change: The Role of Urban Agriculture in European Policy

Roof garden, Vegetable garden on the roof, Vegetables on the roof of the building, Agriculture in urban on the roof of the building. Shutterstock ID:1010959666 In the concrete jungles of our cities could take root a quiet revolution: urban agriculture. As we struggle with the challenges of food security, environmental degradation, and climate change, harnessing the potential of urban spaces for agricultural production can emerge as a solution. Urban agriculture has a myriad of benefits which could be delivered to people through a reevaluation of European policies. Urban agriculture offers a broad range of benefits that extend beyond mere food production. Firstly, it fosters food security by bringing fresh, locally grown produce closer to urban dwellers, reducing reliance on long-distance transportation and mitigating the increasing risks associated with disruptions to global supply chains. Moreover, cultivating crops within cities promotes biodiversity as green spaces created through urban agriculture serve as habitats for diverse flora and fauna. Additionally, urban agriculture plays a pivotal role in mitigating climate change. By converting impervious surfaces, vacant lots, rooftops, and walls into productive green spaces, carbon sequestration is enhanced, while reducing the urban heat island effect and mitigating stormwater runoff, thereby increasing urban resilience to extreme weather events. Finally, engaging in urban agriculture fosters community cohesion and social inclusion. Community gardens and allotment schemes provide spaces for interaction, knowledge sharing, and skill development, forging stronger bonds among residents and promoting a sense of ownership and pride in local neighbourhoods.
